INFO FOR NON-MORRIS DANCERS
What's it all about?
This Day of Dance is a celebration of
all forms of our Traditional Dance in
the fine City of Nottingham. The
groups (sides) are all members of
The Morris Federation, Open Morris, or
The Morris Ring.
The three organisations come
together as a massed group annually
in a host town. Nottingham Revels
2009 is organised by two local sides:
Lady Bay Revellers and Whip the Cat
Rapper, with assistance from
Nottingham City Council.

What am I seeing?
Cotswold Morris: with sticks and
hankies, originating from the Cotswold
region.
This is what most people think
of when they hear the word 'morris'.
Border Morris: based on the traditional
dances of the English /Welsh
Borders.
Traditionally dancers would
try to disguise themselves by
blackening their faces with charcoal
or ash so that they could not be
recognised and accused of begging.
Some Border sides now decorate their
faces with elaborate patterns.
North West: usually processional
dances, danced in clogs, created in
the North West Mill towns.
Rapper Sword: small group dances
using flexible swords from the mining
communities in the North East of
England.
Longsword: from the North of
England, danced with rigid swords.
Molly: dancing originating from farm
labourers Plough Monday
celebrations in the Fens.
Clog Step: intricate step routines from
across the British Isles.
